I have been a reader of this forum, podcast listener and compassionate cookbook reader ever since day one of veganism. A number of posts on this forum got me to thinking that there should be some polite, effective way to let restaurant owners/managers know that their vegan options stink....or that we really appreciate the efforts they've taken to be vegan friendly. I came up with the idea of having cards preprinted with little check boxes like "No/too few menu options without meat, dairy or eggs." and "Staff needs to be educated on vegetarianism" -- stuff like that. And even "Thanks for being vegan friendly!" And I'd leave the cards when I paid my bill. Then I figured I'd give the manager a chance to make some changes and let me know about it so I could return if they actually made some positive changes -- I gave them a way to do that. Then, I figured as long as I was doing this, I might as well turn it into a project that would help the vegan community (as well as people with food allergies and disabilities since their needs are often overlooked in restaurants as well. So I created a little website where people can download the cards and a little forum where the restaurant owners can post what they've changed. I called it VisitOwl (the domain name pickings were slim). If you're interested in taking a look at what this forum inspired, or even better if you're interested in helping kick off this project, check out:

Reply with quote | #2 | Love it! I always make comments when a restaurant has a comment card, but it seems like few restaurants have them. I have occasionally written a letter, but I love this card idea. I just printed some out. I have a gluten-free co-worker so I printed a page of the food allergy version for her. The only suggestion I have is to make them a bit larger so the font is not so small. Thanks!

Thanks. I think I will try to put up a couple of versions of each card so there is an 8-on-a-page, 6-on-a-page, 4-on-a-page version. And how did I miss gluten-free on the allergies card?!?! I could be written in on the blank but I should probably make room for it. |

Fantastic Idea! I'm printing a bunch and going to keep them with me and use often. Unfortunately I have to eat out more than I would like, and more times than not I am either very limited in choices or have no choices other than the "salad". Now I have a newly diagnosed son allergic to gluten so this should be fun! thank you for the wonderful cards. |

Reply with quote | #5 | As a result of people's feedback, we just got professionally printed cards to leave at restaurants telling them they need better vegan options. They came out really nice and we're offering them cheap (less than $5 including shipping for 50 color cards) to get the project rolling. Of course you can still print your own for free but these pre-printed ones are really nice.
Check them out on the website http://www.VisitOwl.com |

Reply with quote | #6 | The project is off to a nice start but I'd like to see some people from compassionate cooks participating. I sent Colleen some VisitOwl cards at someone's suggestion. I'd like to give you some too!
If you'd be willing to leave some cards the next few times you eat out, I'll send you some nice pre-printed Veggie hoot cards for free.
Register at http://www.Visitowl.com/forum and drop me (username: Brett) a message or email with "Compassionate Cooks" in the subject and your name and address in the message. I will send you some free cards to use (while they last) at my expense.
This is a nice, inexpensive, non-confrontational way to quietly improve restaurants for vegans -- I hope you will join me.
