I'm going to be moving to Korea for a year, and I'm hoping to gift my beloved KitchenAid food processor to a friend who loves cooking. When I get back, I'm going to need another. I'm interested in purchasing a juicer as well as the food processor. I'm looking at the possibility of just getting a Vita-Mix to do it all. My only concerns are whether or not it can do all the things I'll need it for. I don't mind chopping and slicing my own veggies, so those functions of the KitchenAid are nice but not necessary. I figure I can always strain smoothies if I want juice.
Any opinions on this action?
Thanks!

I have a VitaMix and absolutely LOVE it, but I don't think it can exactly take the place of those other two appliances. The motor is so powerful that I don't think it can really chop veggies; it would just puree them, even on low. However, I never really use my food processor for slicing/chopping veggies, so as you said, that can easily be done with a knife. The one big thing I think I would miss about my food processor is making mock "tuna" salad with chickpeas; the food processor is so great at chopping the chickpeas down to the proper size, and a blender couldn't do this... I also don't know if the blender could make a chunky pesto the way I like. The VitaMix could take the place of a food processor for doing things like making hummus, nut butters, nondairy milks, etc., but I don't know if it could take the place of a juicer... I make a lot of vegetable juices, and I think there would be a ton of good juice wasted if I blended the veggies with water, then tried to strain on my own.
I have a juicer (this one) & use it all the time. I splurged on that model, though, after lots of research & trying to figure out which juicer yields the best, most high quality juice. I am very, very happy with it, but if you're looking for a cheaper one, a friend of mine has this one & likes it. She has never had a problem with it.
If I had to buy one appliance, it would be the VitaMix, though I also love & use my food processor & juicer all the time... Maybe you could start with the blender & see if you miss having a food processor, and then eventually buy a juicer if you really want to make your own juice? I have gradually purchased all my appliances because I could never afford to do it all at once!
Hope my long-winded two cents was helpful!
Jessica

Thanks! From my brief research, I feel similarly about the VitaMix. I'm still hoping I would be able to get away with it doing everything, but I'll find out when I get it. Now I have to figure out the model I want...
Thanks again! Sarah

I bought a reconditioned 5200 & it saved me about $100 from buying a "brand new" one. It's in perfectly new condition, as all "reconditioned" means is that the blender was either returned unused, or lightly used by a VitaMix rep during an in-store demo. I love it & works perfectly!
It seems that VitaMix does not currently have any reconditioned models available... I might suggest writing to them to ask if they expect to have them available again, as I really think it's a great deal! They even carry the same warranty as the "new" machines.

I will keep an eye out for the reconditioned models. I can't get one right now anyway, so I have some time to gather information before making my move. |
