Hi everyone,

I've been a vegetarian for about 12 years, and have recently become vegan. Back when I became a vegetarian there wasn't as many veggie options or resources, and at one point I thought about going to a nutritionist. Unfortunately I didn't have much luck finding one that didn't believe that I needed to eat meat or follow the standard food guide. Years later I'm about to return to school to become a nutritionist (registered), and would like to be one that works with veg/vegan clients or people wanting to transition to either. I was telling a co-worker about my goals, and they ridiculed the idea of wanting to focus on helping non-meat eaters - basically saying there was no market for such a thing. What do you guys think? Any thoughts would be appreciated.

OMG!! I think that it is a great idea. To be able to work on what you believe in, must be just GREAT!!!! Since you are vegan, you will be have all what it takes to guide anybody else trough healthy nutrition...
That will make you a successful person.
Don't listen to your peers, and go for it!!!

There is quite a market. So much so that the ones who do practice with the vegan lifestyle charge an arm and a leg because they are in high demand but few and far between exist. I would love a nutritionist but all I can afford are those that think I need milk to get my calcium.

I have no doubt that there is a market for this.  And, with veganism making its way more and more into mainstream consciousness, the need for nutritionists specializing in veg diets is only bound to increase.

Congratulations on your return to school.  I wish you lots of success!

You know, I often think about going to school to be a nutritionist.  My main hang up was where do you find a job once you get your degree?  If you work at a regular clinic, will they allow you to focus only on vegan nutrition?  I would never be able to advise people to eat meat and dairy, etc.  I suppose you could open your own business.  And maybe there are health and wellness clinics out there that would allow you to advise on vegan diets only.  As for the market, I think that you would want to market yourself not as vegan, but just as healthful living/eating.  That would seem more open to those who aren't vegan yet and may open the door for them to start thinking about how simple being vegan can be.  What school are you going to?  Best of luck
